Helix High School’s Interact Club is a service organization sponsored by La Mesa Sunrise Rotary.  The club is vibrant and diverse, and students meet weekly with their advisor Ms. Irving and Rotary liaisons Bill Pogue and Jo Ann Bergquist. Dr. Pogue has been working with Helix Interact since 1998!

On Friday, February 7, Interact and Rotary teamed up to provide Foster Parents Respite, an evening out for parents while their children were entertained by crafts, face painting, games, music and of course pizza by members of both clubs.  Sixteen Helix students attended and led various activities during the evening.  Students earn community service hours toward their graduation requirements through their participation in projects like this.

The club also has been involved in events such as Habitat for Humanity, St. Vincent de Paul’s Thanksgiving dinner, beach and Lake Murray clean ups, and field trips in the last few years.  This year’s officers are President Sami-jo McClish, Vice President Charley Nocere, Secretary Jodi-Ann Johnson and Treasurer Kayla Shaw.  During February 13th’s meeting, next year’s officers were elected:  President, Adam Oraigat, Vice President Ailed Vasquez, Secretary, Adrian Lam, Treasurer Faduima Abdi, and Publicity Jaycie Matthews.  The Membership Committee Chair position is still available.

When asked what they liked most about the organization, students answered the opportunity to earn community service hours and the sense of community felt by members both at meetings and events and also in school.  Interact and Rotary are about making a difference locally, nationally and internationally, and their impact is felt globally.  It’s not too late to get involved.
