Did you know about 40% of all food produced in the U.S. ends up in a landfill? Or that the methane organic waste produces is 70 times more potent as a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide?

Those important facts and others were shared in a presentation on the recent update to the City of La Mesa Climate Action Plan at our meeting on February 7.

Serena Lee, Environmental Analyst, described the move to collect and recycle organic waste from homes, businesses, and institutions such as schools as required by a statewide law called SB 1383. Everyone can play a part!

Did you know that La Mesa has the most trolley stops per capita in San Diego County? Logan Kelly, Transportation Fellow, shared information about ways La Mesa is working to increase the number of electric vehicle charging stations and provide alternatives to driving, such as a new e-bike incentive program set to launch March 3.

Lainey Bloom, Community Engagement Fellow, informed us about the City of La Mesa's commitment to power its buildings from 100% renewable energy sources through San Diego Community Power, one of only five cities (plus the County's unincorporated areas) to make this investment. La Mesa residents can help the environment and save money on their utility bills by picking up a no-cost DIY energy saving and sustainability toolkit.

Our Club members appreciate the information shared and the efforts of the City of La Mesa to achieve the goals of the Climate Action Plan.
