There is a large population of "Working Poor" people in our community. Many work multiple part-time jobs, and still cannot afford to rent an apartment! During this time of Covid19, things have gotten much worse, forcing many more people into unemployment and homelessness. Often entire families live out of the only shelter they own which is their car. Unfortunately, most neighborhoods do not find it acceptable to have random cars parked on their streets at night. With no restrooms, and no safe place for children, it can be a real problem. Jewish Family Services has made available guarded "Safe Parking" lots, where the working poor with vehicles can safely park to sleep overnight. They rely upon volunteers to assist with bringing meals to people who are struggling to make ends meet every day! The protocol has changed due to Covid19, but they are still in need of volunteers.
